|Enbridge Energy Partners LP was formed in 1991. The Company owns and operates crude oil and liquid petroleum transportation and storage assets, and natural gas gathering, treating, processing, transportation and marketing assets in the United States of America. Its general partner is Enbridge Energy Company, Inc. The Company provides services to its customers and returns for its unitholders mainly through the following activities: Interstate pipeline transportation and storage of crude oil and liquid petroleum; Gathering, treating, processing and transportation of natural gas and natural gas liquids, or NGLs, through pipelines and related facilities; and Supply, transportation and sales services, including purchasing and selling natural gas and NGLs. It conducts its business through three business segments: Liquids, Natural Gas and Marketing. The Company's Liquids segment includes the operations of its Lakehead, North Dakota and Mid-Continent systems. These systems largely consist of FERC-regulated interstate crude oil and liquid petroleum pipelines. The Lakehead system, together with the Enbridge system in Canada, forms the longest liquid petroleum pipeline system in the world. The Company's Lakehead system, together with the Enbridge system in Canada, forms the longest liquid petroleum pipeline in the world. The Lakehead system spans a distance of approximately 1,900 miles, and consists of approximately 5,100 miles of pipe with diameters ranging from 12 inches to 48 inches, and is the main transporter of crude oil and liquid petroleum from Western Canada to the United States. The System serves all the major refining centers in the Great Lakes and Midwest regions of the United States and the Province of Ontario, Canada. The Company's Natural Gas segment consists of natural gas gathering and transmission pipelines, as well as treating and processing plants and related facilities. The Company's Marketing segment provides supply, transmission, storage and sales services to producers and wholesale customers on its gathering, transmission and customer pipelines, as well as other interconnected pipeline systems. The Company's Marketing activities are mainly undertaken to realize incremental revenue on gas purchased at the wellhead, increase pipeline utilization and provide other services that are valued by its customers. It also encounters competition in its natural gas gathering, treating, and processing and transmission businesses. The Company's transmission and gathering pipelines and storage and processing facilities are subject to extensive federal and state environmental, operational and safety regulation.|
