| SLM Corporation (Sallie Mae) is a holding company operating through its various subsidiaries. The Company’s primary business is to originate, service and collect loans it makes to students and/or their parents to finance the cost of their education. The Company also provides servicing, loan default aversion and defaulted loan collection services for loans owned by other institutions, including the Department of Education (ED). It is a holder, servicer and collector of loans made under the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). The Company’s primary three segments include the Consumer Lending segment, the Business Services segment and FFELP Loans segment. On September 1, 2011, the Company acquired SC Services & Associates, Inc. During the year ended December 31, 2011, it launched Sallie Mae Insurance Services, which offers directly to college students and higher education institutions tuition, renters’ and student health insurance. |
