|Buckeye Partners LP was organized in 1986 under the laws of the state of Delaware. The Company owns and operates liquid petroleum products pipeline systems in the United States in terms of volumes delivered, with approximately 6,000 miles of pipeline. It also owns more than 120 liquid petroleum products terminals with aggregate storage capacity of over 110 million barrels. The Company also operates and maintains third-party pipelines under agreements with major oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical companies, and performs certain engineering and construction management services for third parties. It owns and operates a natural gas storage facility in northern California, and is a wholesale distributor of refined petroleum products in the United States in areas also served by its pipelines and terminals. The Company operates in four business segments; Pipelines & Terminals; Global Marine Terminals; Merchant Services; and Development & Logistics. The Pipelines & Terminals segment receives liquid petroleum products from refineries, connecting pipelines, vessels, and bulk and marine terminals; and transports those products to other locations for a fee and provides bulk storage and terminal throughput services in the continental United States, it owns and operates pipeline systems and liquid petroleum products terminals in the continental United States., it also provide crude oil services, including train off-loading, storage and throughput. The Global Marine Terminals segment provides marine bulk storage and marine terminal throughput services along the U.S. East Coast and Caribbean, it has liquid petroleum product terminals located in The Bahamas, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia in the Caribbean, and the New York Harbor. The Merchant Services segment is a wholesale distributor of petroleum products in the United States and in the Caribbean; its segments products include gasoline, propane, ethanol, and biodiesel and petroleum distillates such as heating oil, diesel fuel, kerosene and fuel oil; its customers consist principally of product wholesalers as well as major commercial users of these refined petroleum products. The Development & Logistics segment consists of its contract operations of third-party pipelines, which are owned principally by major oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical companies and are located primarily in Texas and Louisiana, its segment performs pipeline construction management services, typically for cost plus a fixed fee. The Company faces competition from marine transportation, integrated oil and gas companies, marine terminals in the Caribbean, and terminals in New York Harbor. The Company is subject to extensive laws and regulations as well as regulatory oversight by numerous federal, state and local departments and agencies, many of which are authorized by statute to issue rules and regulations binding on the pipeline industry, related businesses and individual participants.|
