DESCRIPTION
| Smithfield Foods, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, began as a pork processing operation called The Smithfield Packing Company, founded in 1936. The company produces and markets fresh meat and packaged meats products both domestically and internationally. The company conducts its operations through four reportable segments: Pork, Hog Production, International and Corporate, each of which is comprised of a number of subsidiaries, joint ventures and other investments. The Pork segment consists mainly of its three wholly-owned U.S. fresh pork and packaged meats subsidiaries: The Smithfield Packing Company, Inc. (Smithfield Packing), Farmland Foods, Inc. (Farmland Foods) and John Morrell Food Group (John Morrell). The Hog Production segment consists of its hog production operations located in the U.S. The International segment is comprised mainly of its meat processing and distribution operations in Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, its interests in meat processing operations, mainly in Western Europe and Mexico, its hog production operations located in Poland and Romania and its interests in hog production operations in Mexico. The Corporate segment provides management and administrative services to support its other segments. The Company’s products compete with a large number of other protein sources, including chicken, beef and seafood, but its main competition comes from other pork processors. The company is subject to various laws and regulations administered by federal, state and other government entities, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and corresponding state agencies, as well as the United States Department of Agriculture, the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyard Administration, the United States Food and Drug Administration, the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission and similar agencies in foreign countries. |
