DESCRIPTION
| James River Coal Company was incorporated in 1991 in Virginia. The Company is engaged in mining, processing and selling thermal and metallurgical coal through eight active mining complexes located throughout eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia and southern Indiana. The majority of its metallurgical coal was obtained in the April 18, 2011 acquisition of International Resource Partners LP and its subsidiary companies (collectively IRP). The IRP Acquisition was completed on April 18, 2011 in an all-cash transaction. The Company has two reportable business segments based on the coal basins in which it operates Central Appalachia (CAPP) and the Midwest (Midwest). IRP is included in its CAPP segment. As of December 31, 2011 its eight mining complexes included 18 underground mines, 9 surface mines and 13 preparation plants. The coal that it sells is obtained from three sources; its Company-operated mines, its mines that are operated by independent contract mine operators, and other third parties from whom it purchase coal for resale. Its Company-operated and contractor mines produce coal using different mining methods. These methods are room and pillar underground mining and contour and point removal surface mining. Its coal production is conducted through seven mining complexes in the Central Appalachia Region and one mining complex in the Midwest Region. Coal from each of its mine complexes is transported by conveyor belt or by truck to one of its preparation plants or directly to one of its load-outs, all of which are in close proximity to its mining operations. These preparation plants remove impurities from the run-of-mine coal (the raw coal that comes directly from the mine) and offer the flexibility to blend various coals and coal qualities to meet specific customer needs. The coal mining industry is subject to extensive regulation by federal, state and local authorities. |
