DESCRIPTION
| Origin Agritech, Ltd. was incorporated in the British Virgin Islands on February 10, 2005. It is a technology-focused crop seed company serving China. It has sought to broaden its usage and penetration of its innovative plant breeding techniques, modern biotechnology, and innovative information and research management to develop and deliver high-yield seeds to the Chinese farming customer base. The Company’s activities include the specialization in the research and development, production, and sales and marketing of crop seeds (corn, rice, cotton and canola) throughout the PRC. It has pursued genetically modified research, and in November 2009, it received the Bio-Safety Certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture as a final approval for commercial use of the world’s first genetically modified phytase corn. This is the first genetically modified corn seed product in China. It is also actively pursuing the approval of other GM seed products including glyphosate resistant corn and Bt Corn. The Company’s focus remains in the production of higher quality seed products, whether proprietary or licensed. It faces competition at three primary levels, including other private Chinese companies, smaller local seed companies, and large multinational hybrid and GM seed producers. It operates its business mainly in China under a legal regime that consists, at the national level, of the State Council, which is the highest authority of the executive branch of the PRC central government, and several ministries and agencies. |
