DESCRIPTION
Aetna Inc. was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1982 under the name of United States Health Care Systems, Inc. The Company is one of the nation's health care benefits companies, serving approximately 36.4 million people with information and resources to help them make better informed decisions about their health care. It offers a range of traditional and consumer-directed health insurance products and related services, including medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, group life and disability plans, medical management capabilities, Medicaid health care management services and health information exchange technology services. Its customers include employer groups, individuals, college students, part-time and hourly workers, health plans, health care providers, governmental units, government-sponsored plans, labor groups and expatriates. The Company’s operations are conducted in three business segments: Health Care, Group Insurance and Large Case Pensions. Health Care products consist of medical, pharmacy benefits management, dental, behavioral health and vision plans offered on both an insured basis and an employer-funded, or administrative, basis. Medical products include point of service (POS), preferred provider organization (PPO), health maintenance organization (HMO) and indemnity benefit (Indemnity) plans. Medical products also include health savings accounts (HSAs) and Aetna HealthFund®, consumer-directed health plans that combine traditional POS or PPO and/or dental coverage, subject to a deductible, with an accumulating benefit account. Large Case Pensions manages a variety of retirement products (including pension and annuity products) mainly for tax-qualified pension plans. Contracts provide non-guaranteed, experience-rated and guaranteed investment options through general and separate account products. Group Insurance products consist of Life Insurance Products, Disability Insurance Products, and Long-Term Care Insurance Products. It owns the trademarks Aetna®, We Want You To Know® and CareEngine®, together with the corresponding Aetna design logo. The Company competes for health information technology (“HIT”) business with other large health plans and commercial health care benefit insurance companies as well as information technology companies and companies that specialize in HIT.
