DESCRIPTION
| Newmont Mining Corporation is engaged in the exploration for and acquisition of gold properties. It is also engaged in the production of copper, mainly through its Batu Hijau operation in Indonesia and Boddington operation in Australia. Newmont Mining was incorporated in 1921 under the laws of Delaware. The Company is a gold producer with operations and/or assets in the United States, Australia, Peru, Indonesia, Ghana, New Zealand and Mexico. At December 31, 2012, Newmont had attributable proven and probable gold reserves of 99.2 million ounces and an aggregate land position of approximately 29,000 square miles. It is also engaged in the production of copper, mainly through its Batu Hijau operation in Indonesia and Boddington operation in Australia. The Company’s operating segments include North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Africa. Its North America segment consists mainly of Nevada in the United States, La Herradura in Mexico and Hope Bay in Canada. Its South America segment consists of Yanacocha and Conga in Peru. The Company’s Asia Pacific segment consists of Boddington in Australia, Batu Hijau in Indonesia and other smaller operations in Australia and New Zealand. Its Africa segment consists primarily of Ahafo and Akyem in Ghana. At December 31, 2012, the Company had 9,510 million attributable pounds of proven and probable copper reserves. Its strategy is to provide shareholders with leverage to gold and copper prices by selling its gold and copper at spot market prices. |
